Boston comes to the Bronx tonight, and this time there is no long series to ease into. Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series starts Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium. The series is best of three; one sharp night can change its entire shape.

The matchup

New York took the 2026 season series 7–6, including four wins in six games at home. The Yankees also won last year's Wild Card meeting in three games. Those results set the stage; they do not hand either club a run on Tuesday. Both teams finished among MLB's top three in team ERA, so the opening innings could turn on who forces the first mistake. MLB's series preview lays out the history and the stakes.

Cam Schlittler vs. Payton Tolle gives the opener a real edge. Schlittler carried a 0.74 regular-season ERA against Boston and held the Red Sox scoreless over eight innings in the 2025 Wild Card Series. Tolle answered with one run allowed and 18 strikeouts in 13 innings across two starts against New York this year. That is a compelling matchup before anyone has swung a bat.

Three things to watch

  1. The first clean chance. Against this caliber of pitching, a leadoff walk, a stolen base, or a two-out hit can carry more weight than the box score suggests.
  2. New York's power at home. The Yankees outscored Boston 26–9 while taking three of four in the Bronx in late August. Their ability to turn one mistake into multiple runs is the route to watch.
  3. Aaron Judge's availability. Judge intends to return for the series after a calf strain, but his role depends on the final lineup and how he feels. Check the announced card before first pitch.

The layer for the night

Postseason in the Bronx has its own dress code. The Bronx Borough Bird No. 99 Varsity Jacket carries it in black and white: Borough Bird on the chest, contrast sleeves with original artwork, and a full BRONX 99 across the back. It is a piece for the train platform, the concourse, and the late ride home—whatever the score says.

Build the rest of the fit through Pinstripe Society: the No. 99 Oversized Tee underneath or the No. 99 Hoodie when the air turns colder. Original streetwear, Bronx energy.
