The Yankees have clinched a postseason spot and home field for the American League Wild Card Series. Tampa Bay has clinched the East. The clubs meet again in the Bronx tonight at 7:05 p.m. ET, but this game is no longer about catching the Rays. It is a chance for New York to show what its October lineup can do without leaning on Aaron Judge.
Tuesday’s 6–1 loss was a reminder of the problem: Drew Rasmussen held the Yankees hitless into the seventh inning. Carlos Rodón’s eight-inning performance in the earlier 2–0 win showed the other side of this club. The pitching can give New York a chance. The lineup has to give it runs.
An October rehearsal
My take: the Yankees should use the remaining games to find a lineup they trust, not wait for Judge to solve everything. His calf strain may keep him out of at least the start of the Wild Card Series. Ben Rice and the rest of the order need to create pressure before the late innings, especially against the kind of strong starting pitching they will see in a short series.
Cam Schlittler is scheduled for Thursday. His season line—14–6, a 1.94 ERA, and 234 strikeouts—makes this a useful October rehearsal. I want to see the Yankees back a strong start with early traffic on the bases and a clean game behind him.
What I expect tonight: Schlittler keeps New York close and the lineup responds better than it did Tuesday night. Our pick: Yankees 4, Rays 2. The larger test begins when the Wild Card Series opens on September 29. A sharper offense this week would give the Bronx something more convincing than simply saying it is ready.
