Rivalry Weather: The Bronx Gets Boston Again

The regular season is almost over. The volume is not.

The city knows the drill.

Boston is coming back to the Bronx for a best-of-three American League Wild Card Series beginning Tuesday, September 29. The winner advances to face Tampa Bay. There is no long series to settle into, no quiet middle game and no room to wait for October energy to show up on its own.

This is the seventh postseason meeting between New York and Boston since 1999. The first six were split evenly. New York won seven of the teams’ 13 regular-season meetings this year, but even that feels like background noise now. Three games maximum changes the scale. Every pitching decision, late-inning matchup and cold at-bat gets louder.

The rotation is still taking shape. MLB reported that New York was considering Max Fried for Game 1, with Cam Schlittler expected to play a major role after his breakout postseason performance last year. Gerrit Cole or Carlos Rodón could be held for a potential Game 3. Aaron Judge’s availability also remains unresolved as he works back from a right soleus strain. Those are the confirmed questions, not predictions.

What does not need confirmation is the setting. A rivalry game in late September already has its own temperature. Add postseason stakes, wet pavement and an evening elevated-train platform, and the city starts dressing differently.

The October uniform is less about piling on official marks and more about choosing the layer that carries the night. The Bronx Borough Bird No. 99 Varsity Jacket does that with a black-and-white body, Bronx 99 back treatment and original sleeve artwork. It reads from across the platform without borrowing a team logo to make the point.

Wear it over a heavyweight tee. Leave enough room for the train, the concourse and whatever the weather decides to do after the seventh inning. This is not souvenir dressing. It is city armor for a three-game sprint.

The matchup is set. The pitching order and final roster are not. Until then, the Bronx gets one weekend to get ready.
